Small talk is done to have a pleasant conversation about common interests or to break the ice before starting an event or to get friendships started.
Below is an example of a small talk.
It was Monday morning and a woman was waiting for the bus when a man arrived, stood beside her and spoke.
Man: What a beautiful morning. A bit windy, but beautiful.
Woman: Yes, you’re right. I love this kind of weather unlike the very hot and humid weather we’ve experienced in the past days.
Man: Absolutely! I bet the bus hasn’t arrived yet.
Woman: You’re right! I’ve been waiting here for 15 minutes.
Man: Really? I hope it will come soon. I’m in a rush.
Woman: I’ll take a taxi if I were you.
Man: I think you’re right. Thank you.
Woman: You’re welcome.
Let's study:
I bet... = I think.../ I believe...
humid = weather has a high amount of water vapor or wet or you'll feel sticky
rush = hurry
Speak English:
You are in your friend's birthday party. Then, you saw a woman, who looks familiar to you, standing near you. How are you going to break the ice? What questions or topics are you going to use?
^_^
Tell me what you think.
Have a great day!
Hello GJ. Thank you for your comments on my blog.
ReplyDeleteHow about this? This is my way.
Woman : Long time no see!
I : What a surprise! How are you?
Woman : Good and you?
I : Pretty good! Can I ask something?
Woman : Sure.
I : Hmm... But you can get angry if I ask that. Promise me that you won't get angry.
Woman : OK.
I : Really?
Woman : Yeah.
I : Actually, you look familiar to me, but I'm so sorry. I don't clearly recognize you.
Hello Toshi. Thank you for the comments, too! And for following my blog. ^_^
ReplyDeleteYour version is good Toshi!
I would like to let you know another way of saying...
'But you can get angry if I ask that.'
is
"I'm afraid you might get angry if I ask that."
In this way, it would be more gentle.
Thank you Toshi!
Have a great day and keep on writing English!
^_^
GJ
I see!
ReplyDeleteThank you, GJ!
